"Ukrainian book publishing during the Second World War"

(dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation)

After the First World War and the national liberation struggle of 1917-1921 many Ukrainians had to escape abroad where they promoted active cultural and educational activities. Ukrainian scientific and educational institutions, established in Czechoslovakia, Poland, Germany, needed a large number of Ukrainian books and textbooks. That is why in Western Europe, the United States and Canada, there were launched large-scale publishing activities of Ukrainian émigré representatives. This process was not decayed during the Second World War. Subjects of Ukrainian book publishing houses both during the inter-war period and in the 1940's were aimed to highlight the history and culture of Ukraine.

The exhibition “Ukrainian book publishing during the Second World War” consists of two sections which highlight trends in printing in Western Europe, the USA and Canada.

Among the exhibited books one can find a monograph of Symon Narizhnyi “The Ukrainian Emigration. Ukrainian Emigration Cultural Work between the Two World Wars”. The book was published in Prague (Czechoslovakia) in 1942. Till the present time, it remains the most thorough research on foreign Ucrainica matters in the first half of the twentieth century.

Various Yuriy Tyschenko’s Prague Publishing House documents (addresses, circulars, advertisements, etc.) disclose the theme of the national book publishing in exile.

Volodymyr Levynsky’s paper “Yuriy Tyschenko. On the occasion of the publishing activity 35th anniversary” tells us about a difficult way of life of both the publisher and his publishing house. The paper was published in “The Lviv news” newspaper by October 3, 1943.

There are also exhibited handwritten documents, namely the lists of scholarly works of an architect, graphic and cognoscente Volodymyr Sichynsky and a historian Mykhailo Antonovych, printed in various languages during 1920-1940.

Ukrainian book publishing in the US and Canada during the Second World War is highlighted by covers of books on historical issues. They are Ivan Vyslotskyi’s “Pavlo Skoropadsky through eyes of witnesses” (Toronto, 1940), Markian Terletsky’s “Our Past. History of Ukraine for the youth” (New York, 1941) and others.

One can find newspaper ads, posters, catalogs at the exhibition. For example, in "The Ukrainian Voice" newspaper for 1944-1945 there were placed notifications of a historian Dmytro Doroshenko’s book "History of Ukraine" release as well as and the release of a book "Memoirs" dedicated to the first Ukrainian settlers in Canada. Exhibition is concluded by a catalog with eighty-four Ukrainian books published in 1945 in Winnipeg (Canada).

The chronological landmarks of documents are 1939-1945.
